When Alan got in touch with Ralston Contracts, his front driveway needed redesigning. Aware that the substantial drive could look like a “concrete facade”, he wanted to work with a contractor who could create an attractive finish to complement the house style, while reducing the ongoing maintenance needed.
Alan instructed Ralston Contacts, and we worked with him to deliver a thoughtful driveway transformation that changed the entire look and feel of the property.
He told us: "It's a superb job which we're delighted with. It's been transformational. Many people have complimented us on how good the whole house looks – it's looking better and saving a lot of time."

The challenge: Reducing maintenance without it becoming a soulless space
Alan's front garden was functional but uninspiring, with a single level of pebbles surrounded by established shrubs and planting, which took a lot of upkeep. Alan and his wife wanted something with much less maintenance but were clear that they didn't want a soulless concrete finish that would jar with the character of their home.
Alan was looking to ensure “it was landscaped in a sensitive way, while blending in with an older detached house." A concrete, boring driveway wouldn’t do. Alan also explained: "The fear was that if this was done badly, it could turn out to be something we really regretted. A botched job could have ended up being very expensive and caused a lot of grief."
Finding the right contractor felt important in achieving this vision. Alan first became aware of Ralston Contracts through the Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce Business Awards, where he'd seen them not only recognised for their work but actively giving back by sponsoring the Start-Up Business of the Year Award category.
Alan explained: "Through their reputation with the Ayrshire Chamber and their commitment to the community, I immediately wanted to approach Ralston to find out what solutions they could offer."
The solution: A considered design that balances hard and soft landscaping
From the first conversation, John put Alan at ease. "When we spoke with John, he immediately understood what it was that we needed. He listened carefully to our requirements and became a design consultant, giving us a solution which was absolutely terrific."
Working across a substantial area – a driveway where you could easily fit five or six cars – John's design expertise came to the fore. Rather than simply paving the whole space, he identified the importance of balance: hard landscaping needed to be offset with planting beds to avoid an overly stark finish and to complement the age and style of the house.
As Alan noted: "John pointed out that in order to achieve a balance, we needed to make sure there were some beds, and that made perfect sense."
A delineated pathway running from the gate to the front door adds a visual focal point, while a circle feature at the front of the house brings a sense of considered design to what could easily have been a flat, uniform surface.
Alan said: "The bricks have been designed in a beautiful way – and the circle in front of the house showed that there was thought behind this and a pride taken in the work."
The work we did included:
Full driveway installation in Tobermore Tegula Trio (bracken) with a charcoal border and Tobermore charcoal kerbstones
A circle feature at the front of the house
A delineated pathway from the gate to the front door
New pathway at the side of the house
New steps built
Planting beds created throughout to soften the space and reduce ongoing maintenance
"It's been transformational. Many people have complimented us on how good the whole house looks. It's a superb job which we're delighted with – and it's saving a lot of time."
The result: A transformational driveway that’s turning heads
Since the project was completed last year, the impact has been clear. The maintenance burden has dropped significantly, the cars are easier to manoeuvre, and the property looks better than ever.
"It's been transformational. Many people have complimented us on how good the whole house looks. It's a superb job which we're delighted with – and it's saving a lot of time."
Perhaps most telling is how naturally the finished result sits alongside the existing house. "It blends in well with the original house style. It looks as if it was there from the very outset. It's been done with thought."
Asked whether he would recommend Ralston Contracts, Alan was unequivocal: "I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Ralston. They provide excellent value for money. They're not the cheapest, but they're very much the best value you could possibly look for."
