When John and Helen first got in touch with Ralston Contracts, their garden was a headache for them – the ground was boggy, and the grass was “a mess”. They'd already spent time trying to improve it themselves without much luck, so they needed someone professional to help.
The family wanted somewhere to both entertain and relax, taking in the impressive view from the garden, and they wanted a space where their son could play safely.
As our client explained, it’s now a space they are happy to entertain in: "Anyone who comes round is really taken aback by how welcoming and comfortable our garden is. If your garden's chaotic, it's not a relaxing environment, but this gives you a kind of zen feeling. It always makes people nice and relaxed."
Read on to see how we helped create a beautiful space the whole family can enjoy.
The challenge: Creating a family-friendly garden with no straight lines
Their existing garden was largely unusable – and their garden room felt disconnected from the rest of the space. They also had established planting and trees they wanted to keep. Design-wise, they wanted no straight lines! Otherwise, they were happy to hand over creative control. As the client put it: "I'm a big believer in somebody else's idea being better than your own. That was certainly the case with the garden."
They spoke to a couple of companies before settling on Ralston Contracts. John explained that they chose to work with us because "Their integrity and how professional they are stands out. They listen. We'd spoken to other companies who almost dictated to us. Ralston listened first."
John mapped out the garden properly and walked John and Helen through some design ideas so they could picture how it would all come together.
The solution: Creating a beautiful but functional garden space
With a design in place, we began the work. A material the client had in mind turned out to be unavailable, so we went away to source alternatives, and presented the client with physical samples rather than photographs, making it far easier to picture how the finished space would look. It was, as the client said, "an issue where John quickly found a solution, presented it, and it looked better than our original choice."
That approach ran through the whole project. "John and his team actively listen to what you're looking for. If he's not sure, he'd double-check. But it was always relaxed. It was never a chore."
For this project, we installed:
A curved porcelain patio in beige to replace the boggy grass, leading naturally to the existing garden room.
A curved, premium astrograss area to give their son somewhere to play.
Circular log stepping stones to create a pathway through the space, with black ice decorative stone and Tobermore kerbstone tying everything together.
As John said, "What really impressed me was how clean the job was. Not just what was going on at the back door, but the whole team was very considerate about the front yard, the driveway, and vehicles. Everything was cleaned away. Very presentable, very professional from start to finish."

The result: A low-maintenance, relaxing garden space
The once disjointed garden now feels seamless. The hard landscaping works around the existing planting rather than competing with it, the curves soften the space, and the whole garden has a calm, welcoming quality that's made it a favourite spot for family time and entertaining alike.
Despite the garden running to around 30 yards in length, the upkeep is minimal and they now get to enjoy it rather than manage it.
Their neighbour saw the finished space and booked a job in shortly after, and our client said he passed on Ralston's name without hesitation: "Their integrity and how professional they are stands out. They listen. We'd spoken to other companies that almost dictated to us about what could and couldn't happen. Ralston listened first. And if there was an issue, there was always a way around it. From start to finish, their values are what set them apart."
