Turning an overgrown garden into a usable family space

Brian came to us with an overgrown garden that had become completely unmanageable. After years of neglect and a difficult period in his life, he wanted a space he could finally enjoy again – something low maintenance, practical, and welcoming for both him and his daughter.

Now, after hiring us to redesign the whole space, it’s a calming sanctuary with multiple social areas, integrated electrics, sheltered seating, new patios, planters and pathways – all designed to suit the family lifestyle and give them a space to be proud of.

He tells us: “My garden is beautiful. I got what I wanted”. Keep reading to discover how we brought Brian’s vision to life.

The challenge: An unusable garden that needed a complete reset

Brian’s wife was the gardener of the family. But after sadly losing his wife, the garden was left neglected for a few years. As someone in his mid-sixties, the garden had become too much to manage and was, in his words, “horrendous”. He explained it was “Basically a forest full of brambles… it could never have been fixed by me”.

Knowing it was time to deal with it, he began the search for a landscaping contractor. Brian wanted someone who could communicate openly and provide transparent pricing to turn the unused, messy space into a low-maintenance garden he could actually use. Unfortunately, this process proved frustrating, as he recalled, “People were giving silly prices, using loads of jargon… and I did not trust them. I was losing faith.”

Attempts to find help left him discouraged – until someone recommended Ralston Contracts. From the first meeting, Brian felt at ease. “Communication was excellent”, and it was “So helpful that Natalie did all the breakdown pricing – I like to know what I’m paying for.”

The solution: Thoughtful design features and practical planning

We helped him plan the clearance and prepare the space for a full redesign, so we had a clean slate to work with. We then worked from Brian’s original sketch to design an easy, low-maintenance garden.

John refined the design and advised on materials, surfaces and layout. We reshaped the space into practical, welcoming areas with privacy and usability at the core. To make the garden enjoyable throughout the day, we added multiple seating areas, softened the layout with an oval turfed lawn and introduced clear pathways that link the whole space.

We also:

  • Installed new fencing

  • Created a screened area to conceal the bin store using a fence and slabbed base

  • Built a raised porcelain patio at the French doors with a pitched-roof wooden pergola

  • Installed two porcelain patios with linear block centre features

  • Constructed a shed base and relocated the existing shed

  • Added decorative granite chip to the remaining areas

  • Built three sleeper planters for low-maintenance planting

Throughout the build, we future-proofed the garden with carefully planned ducting for electrics, ready for lighting, power, and Brian’s planned smart water feature. Brian also appreciated that we took the stress out of material selection, explaining, “He helped me pick the ceramics… I was stressing myself out, and I did not need to. John has the knowledge.”

Despite limited access and minimal space for deliveries, our team managed the logistics smoothly. Their professionalism stood out:

“You could see from the team’s behaviour that they knew what they were doing, and the quality of the finished work was excellent. I can't fault anything. They’re so well-mannered – and couldn’t do enough to help.”

The result: A practical garden to enjoy daily and entertain guests

The redesign created three social areas, a covered dining space, a central lawn, garden lighting and fully integrated electrics that Brian, an electrician, has since extended throughout the garden.

His favourite change is simple. He can enjoy the space again – and the carefully planned covered zones mean he can use it every day.

“Before, you kept the door shut to the garden. Now, when people come, we take them out to the patio area and enjoy entertaining outside.”

His daughter even hosted a birthday party for 35 people in the new garden only a couple of weeks after the work was completed – something Brian could never have imagined doing before!

And when it comes to trust, the thing that had held him back for so long, Brian could not be clearer: “I cannot fault anything Ralston Contracts did. They were very trustworthy, and I have recommended them to people. I was very lucky to find them.”
