Our client* in Ayr came to us with a specific plan to transform the garden of a Victorian villa from an unused space to her gardener’s haven. The south-facing site featured two original stone walls, but little other character.
Seeing the great potential in the rectangular, plain garden space, our client had a clear vision: a beautiful, timeless space built with traditional materials and lasting craftsmanship. “I’m doing this once, so I’m doing it right, and that’s it,” she explained.

The challenge: Curved landscaping within a conservation area
When our client bought the house around seven years ago, she described the garden as “clearly never gardened with any interest”, having been “covered in grass and neglected.” Despite that, she immediately saw its potential and already had a clear vision for how to transform it.
“I drew up in great detail exactly what I wanted... organic curves to make it really, really beautiful with arbours, a greenhouse, summer house, pathways, and lovely warm tones of peaches and creams, which I particularly like – good for the west coast, where it can be very grey.”
Before landscaping could begin, safety and planning hurdles had to be overcome. “It had some very tall, partially dead trees on the south border. I had to go through the planning application to South Ayrshire Council.”
When her previous landscaper retired, the client was left “absolutely stuck, not knowing who to go to.” She needed “a very skilled landscape designer and practitioner” who could bring her vision to life with care and attention, admitting she was “very particular about the materials.”
Ralston Contracts came recommended by a trusted contact – and from the first meeting, our client knew she’d found the right landscape design team. “Communication was excellent from the start,” she said, adding that “John is an absolute perfectionist, which really suited my brief.”
The solution: Landscape design with meticulous project management
From the outset, the project involved detailed technical work and precise craftsmanship. With many moving parts and specific material requirements, every stage required care and coordination.
Working closely alongside our client’s design, we:
Built the greenhouse base to manufacturer specifications and liaised directly with the supplier to confirm delivery, final measurements, and installation
Installed electrics and water to the greenhouse, as well as an outdoor tap, full irrigation system, and water feature
Created three adjoining feature circles (sandstone, grass, sandstone) with a centre base for a large olive tree
Added rose poles around the turfed circle
Installed two seating areas with arbours
Installed a small pond, water feature, compost area base, and new curved-topped fence and gate
Finished with 10mm gravel and premium luxury turf to tie the scheme together
The materials were chosen to complement the Victorian villa and the surrounding conservation area:
Mixed-size riven Indian sandstone
Terracotta rope top edging
Terracotta Victorian edging
Sunset Rouge cobble setts
10mm golden quartz gravel
Neutral pH-balanced soils
Latticed curved-topped wooden fence and gate
As the client described, “John made sure the services were all put in at the right time, in the right way, to the right specification.”
As the work progressed, the full project management service proved to be a standout feature – turning what could have been a complex project into a seamless experience. Our client quickly saw the difference it made, explaining:
“That was fantastic – I didn’t have to be chasing deliveries at all. Natalie did everything… she coordinated all the purchasing, the quantities, the delivery dates, the sequencing and scheduling – which was wonderful, and, in retrospect, absolutely essential.”
Although our client had a clear creative direction, she told us that working alongside John was a collaborative joy. He brought “his artistic flair into the whole thing” and approached the detailed, “finicky” build with care and precision. When there were things she hadn’t considered, “he brought to the design work extra details that were wonderful.”
The Result: A harmonious space and true gardener’s haven
Our client’s garden is now a space filled with joy, purpose, and timeless design, completely transforming the rectangular plot. It will be open to the public in June 2026 through Scotland’s Garden Scheme – a huge joy for both our client and our team.
The finished garden has become a true haven for our client. “I’m out in it practically every day. There are two arbours and seating places for different times of the day. Even on a horrible day, I can be in the greenhouse. It’s been a real, tremendous success. All my friends love it.”
