If you want the most flexible covered space possible, an electrical pergola is hard to beat. The roof opens and closes depending on the weather, so you're not committed to being fully covered or fully exposed.
Built-in heaters and lighting can be added too, which means the space works just as well on a cool evening in September as it does on a bright day in June.
